Gracie and Heather at Roberts Creek Hall April 26

Trudi Fruitti low-res 056

Clown Trudi Frutti read Gracie’s Got a Secret when she wasn’t leading
outdoor Easter egg hunts for kids.

Gracie and I appeared at Roberts Creek Hall on April 26 as part of the Neil Falkner Legacy fundraiser.

This annual event, held by mother Judy Lynne, honours the memory of her son Neil, who died while backcountry skiing.

Each year, Judy raises money to send two youths to an Outward Bound course. Participation in Outward Bound played an instrumental role in changing Neil’s life, inspiring him to become a ski instructor and backwoods enthusiast.

Reading and book signing March 22 in Gibsons

During March break, I’ll be reading Gracie’s Got a Secret, with puppets, at 1:30 p.m. at Windows on the Water Gallery in Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons. I’ll have books on hand before and afterwards for sale and signing.

I’ll also be selling sets of fair-trade fingers puppets — a fish, alligator, and elephant — that were a popular sellout over the holidays last December. Starting at 12:30, I’ll have my other books available too: Vancouver’s Glory Years, Emails from India, and Raincoast Chronicles.

The mall is hosting Antiques Roadshow that day, so it should be a busy time. Come on by.

Come out and see the new “Let go and go with the flow” Gracie stickers, and sets of fair-trade finger puppets (a fish, elephant, and alligator) available for sale. I’ll be available for signing copies of the book.

As part of the Sunshine Coast Artisan Craft Fair, I’ll be at the mall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Lots of artists and craftspeople will be sharing their creations. Come out and see what’s new. Support local authors.

Gracie hits Gibsons, BC with two Heathers

. . .with Gracie, Mopey, and Heather Evans-Cullen

Had lots of fun with Gracie last Saturday (Feb. 9, 2013). About a dozen kids showed up with a parent or grandparent at Gibsons Public Library to hear me read Gracie’s Got a Secret. Children’s librarian Heather Evans-Cullen helped with the puppeteering and she made a great Mopey and Nellie.

I love reading to multi-generational audiences!

Afterwards, Heather invited the children to create their own fish, using construction paper, sparkles, feathers, and more. Many thanks to the dad who took these photos for me on my iPhone.

Gracie a hit at Word on the Street

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30

— Ellie Ewert photo

Gracie and I had fun at Vancouver’s Word on the Street event on a beautiful, sunny Sunday. Colin Thomas of The Georgia Straight introduced me, then I did a brief reading from the book. Many thanks to Vancouver’s KidsBooks for sponsoring me as an author. Although I’ve attended the festival for many years, this was the first time that I presented as a writer.

The festival’s many volunteers and participating publishers always make this annual event a succeess. Even in today’s digital age, the printed word still thrives.

Gracie to appear at Vancouver’s Word on the Street

DON’T MISS THIS FREE AUTHOR EVENT

I’m delighted that Gracie and I will be appearing at Vancouver’s Word on the Street festival on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012.

Drop by the Authors’ Tent at 12:40 p.m. to hear me talk about the book and give a short puppet performance. We’ll be right outside the main public library downtown. I’m there as an “adopted author,” thanks to Kidsbooks in Vancouver.

I’ll be joining dozens of authors and publishers who will be sharing their wares with the city’s book lovers. I’ll have puppets on hand and will encourage lots of audience participation.

Gracie to join Gibsons outdoor show Aug. 25

Heather Conn will be reading Gracie’s Got a Secret on Aug. 25 in Dougall Park, Gibsons as part of a fun-packed summer fundraiser for West Sechelt Playground.

Besides Heather and the headliner act of Bobs and Lolo, a popular singing group, there will be face painting, balloon animals, hot dogs, popcorn, refreshments, and a bouncy castle.

It’s all part of an effort to raise money to add engaging and accessible equipment to the playground at West Sechelt Elementary School. The proposed project includes replacing the existing gravel with an accessible ground cover. Phase one  alone will cost $130,000; phases two and three involve building new accessible park areas on the school grounds geared toward different ages.

The West Sechelt Playground Enhancement Committee is hosting the event. The cost is $10 for children over the age of one and $15 for adults; the family rate is $45. Tickets are available at the school, on Facebook, and on the website coastalinclusion.com. You can also contact Wing at 604-741-0633 for more information.
